Thus we still speak of certain peoples as “primitive” and “backward” because they do not care to rush about the earth at immense speeds, to accumulate more possessions than they can possibly enjoy, to annihilate all peace and silence of the mind with an incessant stream of verbiage from newspaper or radio, or to live like sardines in the din and the fumes of great cities. It seems to have escaped our imagination that evolution and progress have occurred in quite other directions than these.

Alan Watts (via yourperestroika)

When my class discussed Darwin on Monday this was the gist of what I (and a lot of other people were saying). Darwin was a genius but his limitation was in thinking that the only way to evolve was the Western way. He looked down upon the people of Tierra del Fuego because they used the same canoe design for hundreds of years and never ‘improved’ upon it. He considered the lack of ‘improvement’ to be the sign of a less evolved society, although he placed the ultimate blame for their lack of evolution upon their environment and never said that the people or the society were intrinsically incapable of evolving to the same level of Europeans.
